For a couple of reasons this film has been the most anticipated for some time.

Firstly it’s written and directed by Martin McDonough, he of Seven Psychopaths, In Bruges, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and The Banshees of Inisheer fame.

Secondly it’s a dream cast consisting of John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Parker Posey and Tom Waits.

Set in 1973, two CIA operatives played by Malkovich and Rockwell are part of the political coup in Santiago, Chile before heading to Easter Island because of an agreement the two had made previously.

Within the beautiful backdrop of the island, the two engage in colourful repartee discussing their dark histories and their immediate plans.

The dialogue is excellent and the chemistry between Rockwell and Malkovich is spot on. I love Rockwell and he plays what Lynda calls his ‘earnest loser’ role to perfection but it’s Malkovich who excels, probably earning an Oscar nod for his performance.

Steve Buscemi plays their boss and is always a scene stealer. Parker Posey doesn’t do enough acting these days which is a real shame as she is such a natural comedic actor. Tom Waits simply plays himself in a nice bit part.

McDonough has a fascination putting together quality pairs in interesting narratives and plots. This is no exception with both leads starring in every scene.

Given the era  that the film is set in, older audience members may be interested in some of the references to the CIA’s involvement in what have otherwise been considered conspiracy theories.

It’s a taut, superbly acted and engaging film that perhaps at two hours was a tad long. Another fine addition to the Irish director’s outstanding resume. 8/10.

November sees the start of the British Film Festival and if it’s anything like last year’s we are in for a treat. The trailers I’ve seen appear to confirm that. Here is a link to the festival.
