The Beam Brothers were a loyal bunch of Werribee FC supporters who attended all the games for a good decade in the early 90’s. Some of those guys are still a part of the club to this day and have contributed heavily to volunteer roles.

There was always a core dozen or so in the group and they were never short of a word when it came to winding up the opposition or passing on advice to us the players after the game. I’m not sure if Jim Beam was their drink of choice, more so anything wet may have been the criteria!

On presentation night 1993, they surprised us by presenting a Beam Brothers Best & Fairest and Runner Up Best & Fairest. Best and Fairest was a 700ml bottle of Jim Beam which was awarded to Jack Aziz and surprisingly the Runner-Up award, a 375ml bottle of Jim Beam was presented to me. Both bottles were engraved as per the photo above which was a nice gesture. It was a popularity vote I think in my case. I may have mesmerized them with my tattoos perhaps, but Jack was an inspired choice having nearly kicking a ton of goals that year. Nonetheless, I’ve kept the award intact despite many moves in the past 25 years and greatly appreciated it.

Greg and I felt the Beam Brothers deserved a shout out in 1992. Crowds in the VFA were down and it was groups of supporters like the Beam Brothers that added colour to the games each week. Enter “Beam Brother” sung to Bobby Darin’s “Dream Lover”.

Every game I hope and pray

A Beam Brother will come my way

On the Hill is where they stand

With cans of VB in their hands

Chorus

Because I want, a Beam to call my own

I want a Beam Brother, so I don’t have to drink alone

Beam Brothers where are you?

I’m on my own and feelin’ blue

I’ve got a can that’s very cold

You’re on the hill that’s what I’ve been told

Chorus

Some games, I’m in the crowd, looking for the Beams

Some games, I sit at home and see them on TV

Beam Brothers, be my friend

When I sleep I dream of them

I know of only one thing that’s true

Beam Brothers I love you

Chorus
