Wed 3rdSeptember 2014. Headed off to Radio City Music Hall for a tour and grabbed a frapuccino to start the day with cream on top! We’ve been to Radio City a couple of times and been scared off because of queues of people we had seen. It turns out they were auditioning for “America’s got Talent” so we found the entrance for the tour and it was another fantastic surprise.
The theatre was built in 1932 and was restored to its original condition in 1999. It’s the ultimate in art deco architecture I’ve ever seen. They spent $70m fixing it up. Most of the damage was from cigarette smoke and it is now breathtaking. The stage is the largest in the world and it has hydraulics that lift the stage and orchestra that were so well designed they used the technology on WW2 warships and are still used today in the theatre. Vic Roads pay attention… 1932. Ring Road?
Our guide was an actor in her 60s and she was hilarious and very proud of the place. Too much history to note here but let’s say every man and his dog has played there as well as the Grammys, Tony’s you name it. Madison Square Garden actually own Radio City also so if you want to go to both those tours we would highly recommend it.
